Importance of a Professional email address

Importance of a Professional email id in Job Search & Business Communication

In today’s world virtually all applications / business communication are online vide email.

How would you react if you were to receive an application for a Country Sales Manager for an industrial product or a business proposal from a

1. “handsomeharry@……….” or
2. “cooldude@……….” or
3. “knottyritz@……….” or
4. “deadlydhawan@………. “ Or
5. “cobra1gh@………..”

Believe it or not, some of these are samples of some email ids / online mails I have seen, though not necessarily for the Country Sales Manager position.

In my opinion, while these may be great for personal interface – it may not be too appropriate for a professional use, of course, depending on the context / profession

Your professional email id, much like your photograph or CV or cover letter or even signature, is an integral part of your personal branding .

People, specially recruiters ( internal or external) and interviewers , , form opinions on the basis of photographs, captions, presentation / layout of cvs – but these normally come after one sees the email id in the inbox

It is in this context that the email id assumes great importance

Here are a few thoughts on what a good professional email id could be.

1) Keep it relevant – to your industry / profession
– eg. Cooldude @ …….. or creativedanny @……. may be relevant in the Advertising or Creative or
fashion Space – but may not be so appropriate for the Banking , Consulting or Industrial
Sector.

Similarly “handsomeharry’ similar maybe appropriate for the modeling world or when one is
seeking an alliance

2) Should describe you – in a professional / relevant manner

3) Reasonably short / easy to remember & recall
Some common structures that can be used ,are

a) Name. surname OR surname.name OR initials e.g.
i. dipy.nigam@……….
ii. Nigam.dipy@…………
iii. D.nigam@…………
iv. Dipy.n@….

b) name or surname eg
i. dipy@………
ii. Deependra@…………. r
iii. Nigam@…….

c) Name or surname and discipline/ descriptive eg

i. rohanMBA2016@……..
ii. jitugraphicdesigner @…..
iii. amalconsultant@………
iv. baldevtrainer@………..

d) Descriptive of profession or expertise
i. Personaltrainer01@…….
ii. Graphicdesigner01@…….
iii. Searchconsultant@……..

While virtually infinite variations / combinations are possible – the moot point is that – like any other sales communication, one needs to see it from the point of view of the recipient – how are they likely to perceive it .

Lots more can be written about this – I would appreciate comments – specially additional points that one should keep in mind while finalizing their professional email id
